FAQs
What sizes do Whynter upright freezers come in?
Whynter upright freezers range from 1.1 cu. ft. mini freezers that fit on a counter or under a desk, to 2.1 and 3.1 cu. ft. compact uprights for kitchens, offices, and dorms, up to 8.3 and 13.8 cu. ft. upright deep freezers for serious household storage. As a sizing rule of thumb, each cubic foot holds roughly 25 pounds of frozen food, so a 3 cu. ft. compact upright stores about 75 pounds.
Is an upright freezer better than a chest freezer?
For most homes with limited space, yes. An upright freezer uses far less floor space than a chest freezer of similar capacity, and its shelves and baskets keep food visible and organized instead of buried in a deep well. Chest freezers hold temperature slightly longer during power outages, but uprights are easier to load, easier to defrost, and fit in kitchens, garages, offices, and apartments where a chest freezer won’t.
Can a Whynter upright freezer be used as a refrigerator?
Select Whynter upright models are convertible fridge/freezers that switch between modes with the temperature control. In refrigerator mode, they hold roughly 32 to 50°F for beverages, dairy, and produce; in freezer mode they reach 0°F and below for frozen storage. If you need one unit that can change roles seasonally, freezer for bulk storage, fridge for entertaining, choose a convertible model.
Can I put an upright freezer in my garage?
Yes, if the garage stays within the recommended ambient range of about 50 to 90°F. In an unheated garage that drops below 50°F, the thermostat senses cold air and stops running, which can let food thaw; above 90°F, the compressor works overtime. An insulated or climate-controlled garage is fine; keep the freezer dry, out of direct sunlight, and away from heat sources like a water heater or dryer.
How much does an upright freezer cost to run?
Very little. Whynter upright freezers are Energy Star rated, and compact models use roughly 220 to 240 kWh per year, about $30 to $40 annually at average U.S. electricity rates, or roughly $3 a month. Manual-defrost uprights like these use less energy than frost-free models because they don’t run heating cycles. Keeping the freezer at least three-quarters full and defrosting before frost passes 1/4 inch keeps consumption at the low end.
Are upright freezers noisy?
No. Whynter compact upright freezers run at under about 42 dB, quieter than a normal conversation and comparable to a library. You’ll hear a low hum when the compressor cycles on, and occasional clicks, gurgles, or cracking sounds as refrigerant flows and interior surfaces expand and contract. These are normal. Placing the unit on a level, hard surface with proper clearance keeps operation at its quietest.
Do Whynter upright freezers have a lock?
Yes. Whynter upright freezers include a cylinder lock with two keys, so you can secure the contents. The lock is a key reason these units are popular for garages, offices, breakrooms, rental properties, and households that need to keep medications, lab materials, or expensive food (like game meat or breast milk) protected from curious kids or shared-space traffic.
Can the freezer door be reversed?
Yes. Whynter upright freezers have a reversible-swing door that can be mounted to open from the left or the right, so the unit fits against either wall or in a tight corner. Reversing the door is a straightforward job with household tools using the steps in the user manual, and the recessed handle keeps the front flush either way.
How long should I wait to plug in the freezer after delivery?
If the freezer was transported upright, let it stand in place for at least 2 hours before plugging it in. If it was laid on its side at any point, let it stand upright for as long as it was on its side, up to 24 hours, so the compressor oil settles back where it belongs. Plugging in too soon after a sideways move is one of the most common causes of early compressor damage.
What temperature should I set my upright freezer to?
For safe long-term food storage, your freezer should maintain an internal temperature of 0°F (-18°C). Whynter dial-controlled upright freezers have an adjustable temperature range of -11°F to 10.4°F. Start with the dial at the middle setting, allow 24 hours for the temperature to stabilize, and adjust as needed using a freezer thermometer until the internal temperature is around 0°F.
How long does the freezer take to get cold before I can add food?
Run the freezer empty for at least 2 to 4 hours, until it reaches the set temperature, before loading it. For a large grocery load or when fast-freezing fresh meat, set the dial to the coldest setting an hour or two beforehand, then return it to the normal setting once everything is frozen solid. Adding warm food to a freezer that hasn’t stabilized makes the compressor run far longer than necessary.
How much clearance does an upright freezer need?
Leave about 6 inches of clearance at the back and sides to allow proper airflow and heat dissipation. Place the freezer on a level floor in a dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources such as ovens or heaters. Adequate clearance helps the freezer operate efficiently and reduces unnecessary compressor run time.
How often does a manual-defrost freezer need defrosting?
Defrost whenever frost builds up to about 1/4 inch on the interior walls, typically once or twice a year with normal use. Unplug the unit, move food to a cooler, leave the door open, and catch meltwater with towels; never chip ice with a knife or sharp tool, which can puncture the liner. Manual-defrost freezers reward the chore with lower energy use and less freezer burn than frost-free models.
How do I clean my upright freezer?
Unplug the freezer and remove all food first. Wash the interior, shelves, and basket with a soft cloth and a mild solution of warm water and baking soda (about 2 tablespoons per quart) or gentle detergent, then dry thoroughly before restarting. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents, and harsh chemicals, which can damage surfaces and leave odors. Wipe the door gasket regularly. A clean, supple gasket is what keeps the cold in.
Why is my freezer not cold enough?
Before requesting service, check these common causes:
- Temperature dial set too warm, or recently bumped
- Door not sealing, check the gasket for gaps, damage, or frost, and confirm the door isn’t blocked by contents
- Heavy frost buildup insulating the interior, defrost if frost exceeds 1/4 inch
- Poor ventilation, restore about 6 inches of rear and side clearance
- Ambient temperature outside the 50 to 90°F operating range
- Recently loaded warm food, allow 24 hours to recover
If none of these resolves it, contact Whynter support or start a live chat.
How long will food stay frozen in a power outage?
A full upright freezer keeps food safely frozen for about 48 hours with the door kept closed; a half-full freezer, about 24 hours. Don’t open the door until power returns. Afterward, food that still contains ice crystals or reads 40°F or below is safe to refreeze or cook. Grouping food close together and keeping the freezer full, even with ice-filled containers, extends how long everything stays frozen.

Whynter upright freezers include a one-year limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship, with a longer term on the sealed compressor system on select models. Register your product and review full terms on the warranty information page. For help with an existing unit, Whynter’s support team is available via live chat or the contact page.
